Keith Godchaux: piano, joined in late 1971 when his wife Donna walked up to Garcia after a show and said her husband should be the next keyboardist. He was. A precise, jazz-leaning player; his fills under Garcia in the '72-'74 stretch are the conversational peak of the band. By 1979 his playing had drifted; he was let go and died in a car crash in 1980.
